چکیده

We propose a strongly lexicalist treatment of translation equivalence where mismatches due to diverging lexicalization patterns are dealt with by means of translation links which capture crosslinguistic generalizations across sets of semantically related lexical items. We show how this treatment can be developed within a unification-based, multilingual lexical knowledge base which is integrated with facilities for semi-automatic development of bilingual lexicons, and describe an approach to machine translation where generation difficulties arising from the lexicalist approach to complex transfer can be solved without making special assumptions about phrasal transfer.

Multilingual Lexical Representation

The approach to multilingual lexical representation developed as part of the ACQUILEX Lexical Knowledge Base (LKB) discussed with specific reference to complex translation equivalence. The treatment described provides a lexicalist account of translation mismatches in terms of translation links which capture cross-linguistic generalizations across sets of semantically related lexical items, and ...

The ACQUILEX LKB: representation issues in semi-automatic acquisition of large lexicons

We describe the lexical knowledge base system (LKB) which has been designed and implemented as part of the ACQUILEX project 1 to allow the representation of multilinguM syntactic and semantic information extracted from machine readable dictionaries (MRDs), in such a way that it is usable by natural language processing (NLP) systems. The LKB's lexical representation language (LRL) augments typed...

Equivalency and Non-equivalency of Lexical Items in English Translations of Nahj al-balagha

Lexical items play a key role in both language in general and translation in particular. Likewise, equivalence is a controversial concept discussed so widely in translation studies. Some theorists deem it to be fundamental in translation theory and define translation in terms of equivalence. The aim of this study is to identify the problems of lexical gaps in two translations of Nahj al-ba...

Loss of the Socio-cultural Implicit Meanings in the English Translations of Mu’allaqat

Abstract Translation of literary texts, especially poetry, is one of the most difficult tasks; it requires mastery and knowledge of the language system and culture, and lack of this might lead to wrong translation. This study aimed to examine the loss and gain of the sociocultural implicit meanings in the English translations of the Mu’allaqat, and assess whether the translators of the Mu’allaq...
